Join us for an import fundamentals day, where we will delve into the basic elements of establishing a compliant import program. You’ll learn where your company may be at risk and discover ways to improve your import program. 

Also, you will have an opportunity to hear from a former CBP auditor and learn about the Customs organization, role of the Ports vs. Centers of Excellence and Customs current audit focus areas.

John Goodrich — Chief Trade Compliance Officer & Principal at JD Goodrich & Associates, Trade Compliance Consultant, Goodrich & Associates

John D. Goodrich is an International Trade Consultant and Licensed Customhouse Broker with more than thirty years of experience in international trade. He is currently the principal in the consulting firm of JD Goodrich & Associates (JDGA.) Founded in 2001 JDGA specializes in assisting clients with import/export logistics and regulatory compliance issues.

Mr. Goodrich has developed his generalist approach to trade through more than three decades of working with a variety of internationally focused firms in the areas of third party logistics, import/export trading, retail, direct marketing and technology. John’s career includes stints with the former Dayton Hudson Corp, the steamship line SeaLand and the direct marketer Lands’ End. This varied and real-world industry experience differentiates Mr. Goodrich from the average consultant and permits him to provide practical, actionable and credible advice to his clients.

As a long-term member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), he takes a strategic view of the roles of international compliance and logistics in the greater supply chain. Mr. Goodrich is a frequent speaker and has addressed audiences nationally at events such as:

Mr. Goodrich is an engaging seminar instructor and speaker on a variety of international logistics and compliance subjects. He leads seminar and webinar courses on behalf of Global Training Centers, Inc., International Business Training (IBT) as well as through other venues. Mr. Goodrich is a regular contributor to the online magazine “International Business Training” to which he has contributed more than 50 articles. In addition, Mr. Goodrich has authored a variety of texts including: • Doing Your Duty - Product Classification According to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States • NAFTA: A Practical Guide to Regulation, Documentation & Procedures • U.S. Import Regulations Procedures and Guidelines • U.S. Audit Preparation & Customs Compliance Mr. Goodrich graduated Cum Laude from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo Michigan with majors in Economics and German and a minor in International Commerce. He performed graduate studies in Economics and German at the University of Bonn in Germany. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He obtained his Customhouse Broker’s license in 1987. Mr. Goodrich and his family reside in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

 

Cathy Petersen — Consultant and Instructor CJ Petersen & Associates LLC

Ms. Petersen is International Consultant and Principal of C J Petersen & Associates, LLC since 1992. She consults and instructs in the areas of Incoterms® rules, export and import documentation, free trade agreements, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. classification, managing forwarders, brokers and carriers, and letters of credit. She conducts research on freight transportation.

Ms. Petersen has been a freight forwarder and an ocean carrier representative; she has served as an educator for a variety of colleges and universities here and abroad. She has been active in the international arena since 1980, which led to her appointment on the Minnesota District Export Council and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Advisory Committee Number 14. She holds both graduate and under-graduate degrees from Mankato State University in regional planning. She is a Licensed Customs Broker, and she has the National Customs Brokers Forwarders Association of America Certified Customs Specialist designation.

Principal, C J Petersen & Associates, LLC, St. Paul, MN. Instructor and consultant on international trade, documentation and regulations at national and international locations. She has conducted export and import process reviews as well as audits at firms large and small. Co-authored books on international trade including “Exporting: Regulations, Documentation, Procedures,” “Managing Forwarders, Brokers & Carriers in Your International Supply,” “U.S. Domestic Terms of Sale and Incoterms® 2010,” “Letters of Credit in International Trade: A User’s Guide,” and “A U.S. Exporter's Guide to Canada.” She has authored many published articles. She has conducted qualitative and quantitative research for State and Federal agencies related to international freight flows, origin and destination of products, and mode of shipment.

Kristin Simonson — Senior Trade Auditor, Deleon Trade LLC

Kristin is a customs compliance consultant with over 15 years of experience navigating U.S. import regulations. Kristin assists clients with identifying and mitigating import risk exposure and navigating the complexities of Customs audits. She uses her extensive former Customs audit experience to assist clients with the design and implementation of import compliance programs that are strong enough to pass a focused assessment or any audit type. She designs and executes statistical samples to quantify areas of non-compliance utilizing the same EZ-Quant Statistical Sampling Software used by U.S. Customs. She has prepared value reconciliation filings covering multiple types of value adjustments, prior disclosure documentation, and has conducted complex reviews relating to the proper valuation of imported merchandise. Kristin also assists clients in responding to U.S. Customs inquiries and audits and provides training on U.S. Customs regulations and internal control implementation.

Before joining Deleon Trade, Kristin served as Senior Auditor and Assistant Field Director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Regulatory Audit Division in Minneapolis for 11 years. As an Assistant Field Director, Kristin supervised auditors who conduct various types of audits ranging from Focused Assessments and Quick Response Audits to Airline User Fee Audits. Prior to becoming an Assistant Field Director, she led a variety of audits including Focused Assessments, commercial fraud audits, user fee audits, and quick response audits. These audits involved many trade areas including value, classification, special duty provisions, anti-dumping duties, and free trade agreements.

Kristin has successfully completed multiple advanced training courses with U.S. Customs including Focused Assessments, Quick Response Auditing, Advanced Value, Evaluating Internal Controls, Statistical Sampling, and Free Trade Agreements.
