From the President

by Sandy Taylor, Hyundai Merchant Marine, MGTA President

Let's hope we see some warm weather in August and September. I could use some more sunlight myself. August 19th is our Annual Golf Outing – I hope to see many of you there. There are still openings for golfers, and three hole sponsor opportunities remain.

These are trying times for most companies and members of the MGTA. I'd love to see more companies and members using our Job Board. It is open to every member.

Our wonderful education committee will have transition options and great new topics.

I'm excited for our next forum in September. Look for a networking meeting where people who are interested in getting more involved by volunteering can hear more about where and what they can participate in. This year, I have seen a surge in volunteers who have become very active and have helped us provide higher-end topics and keep us at the heartbeat of the E-biz world.

Expansion with North Dakota and Wisconsin associations has kicked off, moving our association further in terms of our Midwest partnerships. Mari and Sandy have been reaching out to our Cooperating Organizations, planning for closer partnerships versus merely listing one another as C.O.s.

There are wonderful global companies in the Midwest – we must all remember to support and buy/spend our money from our local firms.

I wish to thank all who attend seminars, forums, and golf outings along with all those volunteering in the committees and such – this is truly the backbone of our organization.

Continued growth of sponsorship, advertising and such initiatives will assist in allowing us to grow and stay positive in a scary economy.

Let's leap into fall. I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming fall seminars, forums and events.

Technology Updates – August 2009

by Mark Toth, DB Schenker, MGTA Board Director, Communications Committee

To date, we have 78 members on LinkedIn! Sign up if you have not done so. It is a nice networking tool for MGTA Members.

The communications committee is interested in the needs of the membership. Please post on LinkedIn or send an email to my attention at

I am interested in how you use technology at your job and or home.
Please share how these tech tools would benefit the MGTA.
Examples being discussed include:

  • webinars
  • Twitter
  • video archive of seminar speakers

We have members throughout the Midwest with different needs.
Travel restrictions and/or scheduling conflicts are noted and respected.

We must use the alternate tools now available to us.

These ideas are not a replacement for Education Seminars. Our goal is to supplement. Let us hear from you.

Changes to the VAT in the EU for 2010

From Blick Rothenberg

There are substantive changes on the way for the VAT. These changes will affect businesses that trade internationally and in particular where services are supplied to or received from other EU countries. For some businesses it will mean significant extra administration and may even require updating accounting and IT systems to enable compliance with the new rules. The following link is provided as a resource:
